Magmon is an UnderWorld Creature from the Dawn of Perim set. He was re-released as Magmon, Retalliator [sic] in the Forged Unity set, and Magmon, Engulfed in the Alliances Unraveled set.

Appearance[]

Magmon resembles a mass of volcanic rock brought to life. He has three large spikes on his back, as well as two smaller ones on his elbows. He also appears to have two smaller volcanoes on his shoulders.

Description[]

Magmon is an awesome lava-like creature who specializes in Fire Attacks. Magmon lives in the Lava Pond. In fact, Magmon can never leave the Lava Pond for more than a few minutes to half an hour. The reason behind this is that because his body is made of the Lava Pond's molting magma (thus the name Magmon) around his fiery core. He can't leave for long without the cool air turning his flaming body to stone. Therefore, he rarely leaves unless forced out of his pond.

Magmon isn't the only creature made from Elemental Forces either-Kaal is also made of such forces.[1]

Character History[]

Magmon is a fiery creature, hailing from the Lava Pond. He is a Creature who’s (mostly) solid as a rock. He lives in the UnderWorld Lava Pond and does not willingly leave it. Without regular exposure to the Pond’s flowing lava, his molten core would cool dangerously and solidify… possibly turning this massive, mighty fighter entirely into stone. Magmon is one of the UnderWorld’s strongest Fire Elementalists who’s mastered the use of Fire, especially in the Lava Pond.

Along with the help of the brainwashed Khybon, Milla'iin was able to flood the Lava Pond. This greatly reduced the power of Magmon, and it was not long until his volcanic body began to solidify.[1] Presumably, it was here when he was brainwashed.

Strategy[]

Original Magmon is largely outclassed by Creatures such as Kaal, Brimflame, and Bladez due to Recklessness greatly cutting his staying power. Despite synergy with cards such as Lava Pond, it is usually not enough to make him a worthy addition to any modern build.

Magmon, Retaliator has a much beefier Energy pool than the original, an extra element, and a similar damage bonus, however he can be much more situational as the boost depends on the deck you are fighting. He does have a niche in M'arrillian builds due to being the Minion with the highest Scanned Energy for cards like Psionic Serenade or Nourishing Nocturne and his Brainwashed ability hitting a wider array of Creatures, but his Recklessness is still a hefty drawback, and lack of Water and Mugic counters hinders his tribal synergy.

Magmon, Engulfed is widely considered a deceptively poor support Creature. While the exchange of Fire 5 and Recklessness seems equivalent at first glance, if your Creature is destroyed by Recklessness, then Fire 5 does not apply to its next attack, and furthermore Recklessness is much harder to mitigate than attack damage. Magmon also does not have any Mugic counters in this form, constricting your resources. While his drawback can be mitigated by Akkalbi in mixed decks, this is still a strategy that leaves the player very short on Mugic ability and is exceedingly fragile due to the lack of defensive options. In pure UnderWorld decks, there is nothing to mitigate Recklessness and his lack of Mugic counters is a hefty drawback, and thus Magmon, Engulfed should never be considered as an option in one. Furthermore, UnderWorld fighters often have built-in damage bonuses, and excessive stacking of attack bonuses runs into the problem of diminishing returns as they will not actually produce meaningful damage output (that is, additional damage bonuses will eventually stop lowering the number of attacks needed to defeat an enemy).
