Strategies[]

The original Ulmar saw play in earlier formats for his Mugic ability and the potential to deal further damage with his ability, but was eventually outclassed by Creatures like Kaal and Nivenna and now sees little play, especially compared to his retrain.

Ulmar, Perithon Racer is a deadly support Creature that offers a renewable source of direct damage. Two copies of him amount to a free Canon of Casualty on every turn, doubled by The Phlogiston (as you can Expend Fire in response to Phlogiston's trigger), giving decks a significant edge in combat, and having a Mugic counter allows him to supplement that damage further with Mugic like the actual Canon of Casualty and Casters' Warsong. While Ulmar is comparatively fragile, having Fire means that if attacked in a burn-focused deck, he still has a good chance of defeating his attacker.

Trivia[]

Of note, Ulmar has a similar appearance to the creature Borth who forms the brains of the Borth-Majar team. It is possible that both are related.
